Liver secondaries symptoms: what to know

Liver metastases are cancer deposits that started in another organ. Some people have no liver-related symptoms and learn about the deposits through scans or blood tests. Others notice reduced appetite, weight loss, nausea, unusual tiredness or discomfort under the right ribs.

As liver function or bile flow is affected, the whites of the eyes or skin may turn yellow, urine may become darker, stools may become paler, and itching can occur. Fluid may build up in the abdomen, causing swelling or a feeling of fullness. These symptoms have several possible causes, so they need medical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Tell your cancer team when each symptom began, whether it is worsening, and how it affects eating, drinking, movement and sleep. The team may examine your abdomen, review medicines, arrange blood tests for liver function and use imaging to assess the liver and bile ducts.

Take prescribed medicines as directed and do not start supplements or herbal products without checking first. Treatment may target the original cancer, the liver deposits, bile blockage or a symptom such as pain or nausea. Ask for help early if eating or drinking has become difficult.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden confusion, fainting, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact your care team promptly for new jaundice, rapidly increasing abdominal swelling, fever or marked drowsiness.
