What liver melanoma may mean

Melanoma is a cancer of pigment-producing cells. A liver lesion described as melanoma may represent spread from a melanoma elsewhere, or, much less often, a melanoma that started in the liver. Imaging alone cannot settle that distinction. Doctors combine scans, a tissue sample when appropriate, examination of the skin and lymph nodes, and other staging information. Seek emergency help for sudden weakness, trouble speaking, seizures, severe breathing difficulty, or collapse. New neurological symptoms need urgent assessment because melanoma can affect the brain.
