Liver levels in blood work: how to read them

ALT and AST can rise when liver cells are irritated, although AST also comes from muscle. ALP and GGT can point toward bile-flow or bile-duct irritation, while bilirubin helps explain jaundice. Albumin and clotting measures reflect protein production and broader liver function. Recent illness, alcohol, strenuous exercise, medicines, supplements, and conditions outside the liver can influence results, so the pattern and trend matter.

Take the full report to a clinician rather than focusing on one flagged value. Provide a complete medicine and supplement list and mention alcohol, recent infection, pain, itching, changes in urine or stools, and travel. Depending on the pattern, follow-up may include repeat blood work, an ultrasound, or tests for viral, immune, muscle, or digestive causes.

Arrange review for persistent abnormalities or symptoms such as yellow eyes, dark urine, pale stools, widespread itching, abdominal swelling, or ongoing nausea. Seek urgent care for confusion, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, or rapidly worsening jaundice.
