Liver function total protein: what the result means

Blood proteins include albumin and several globulins. The liver makes many of these proteins, while the immune system produces others. A lower result can occur when protein production is reduced, protein is lost through the kidneys or gut, or nutrition and fluid balance change. A higher result may reflect dehydration or increased immune proteins. One result cannot identify the cause by itself, and a reference range may vary between laboratories.

Review the total protein alongside albumin, bilirubin, and liver enzymes in your Liver Function Test. Tell the clinician about vomiting, diarrhoea, swelling, weight change, alcohol use, and every medicine or supplement you take. Further blood or urine testing may help distinguish a liver, kidney, immune, or hydration-related explanation.

Arrange medical review for a result that stays outside the laboratory range, especially with yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, leg swelling, persistent vomiting, or unusual tiredness. Seek urgent care for confusion, severe weakness, vomiting blood, or black stools.

Ask which protein is driving the result, whether albumin or globulins are also unusual, and whether you need repeat testing or urine checks.
