What does SGOT mean on a liver function test?

AST is found in the liver, heart, skeletal muscles, and other tissues. For that reason, an increased SGOT does not identify one cause by itself. Clinicians compare it with ALT, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, symptoms, medicines, alcohol exposure, and recent strenuous exercise.

A result within the laboratory range does not answer every liver question, and an isolated change may need context or a repeat test. Viral hepatitis, alcohol-related injury, medication effects, and muscle injury are among the possibilities a clinician may consider.

Review the number, the laboratory reference range, and the other markers with your clinician. Mention new medicines, herbal products, heavy exercise, muscle pain, and any history of hepatitis or alcohol use. Avoid changing treatment without advice; the useful next step may be observation, repeat testing, or targeted evaluation.

Get urgent help for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or yellow skin with marked sleepiness. Arrange prompt medical review for jaundice, very dark urine, pale stools, or persistent vomiting, particularly if these symptoms began with the abnormal report.

Ask whether the SGOT change is isolated, how it compares with ALT, and whether muscle causes are plausible. Clarify whether you need a repeat blood test, medication review, imaging, or tests for viral hepatitis.
