What should you know about liver function test profile?

A profile commonly brings together enzymes, bilirubin and measures of protein production. Enzyme changes can suggest irritation or altered bile flow, while albumin and clotting results offer different information about how the liver is performing its production work. These markers do not all change at the same time, so an isolated result and a group of related changes can have different interpretations.

Clinicians compare the profile with earlier tests and consider alcohol, medicines, supplements, metabolic health and infection risks. Alcohol Use Disorder and viral hepatitis are examples of conditions that may be assessed when the history or pattern points in that direction; the profile itself does not identify one cause by itself.

Take the complete report to the appointment, including the laboratory’s reference intervals. Make a written list of medicines and supplements and mention recent illness or changes in alcohol use. Ask whether you need another blood sample, an examination, imaging or a specific hepatitis test. Continue prescribed medicines unless the treating clinician tells you otherwise.

Urgent assessment is appropriate for yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, new confusion, unusual drowsiness or bleeding. These symptoms can matter even before a follow-up profile is available.
