What should you know about liver function test parameters?

ALT and AST are enzymes that may increase with irritation or injury to cells. ALP and GGT can change when bile ducts or bile flow are involved, though they can also be influenced by other conditions. Bilirubin is handled by the liver and leaves the body in bile. Albumin and clotting measures provide information about production functions, especially when interpreted over time.

The same parameter can change for different reasons, and a normal value cannot answer every health question. The clinician considers symptoms, examination findings, previous results, alcohol exposure, medicines, supplements and possible viral hepatitis. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C require specific assessment rather than being diagnosed from a general parameter alone.

Ask which parameters changed and whether the pattern suggests irritation, impaired bile flow or reduced production. Give a complete medication and supplement list, including products bought without a prescription. Keep scheduled follow-up, because repeating the panel can show whether a change is settling or continuing. Never alter treatment based only on an internet reference range.
