What should you know about causes of high liver function tests?

Viral hepatitis can irritate liver cells, while alcohol-related injury and some medicines or supplements can do the same. Gallstones or other blockage may affect bile-related markers. Fat accumulation, autoimmune liver conditions and muscle or other tissue problems can also alter selected enzymes. Sometimes a recent infection or strenuous activity changes a result temporarily. Testing may be needed to separate these possibilities.

Bring the exact report and a list of every medicine, supplement and recreational substance. Tell the clinician about alcohol, travel, tattoos or medical procedures, sexual exposure, abdominal symptoms and family liver problems when relevant. Follow advice about repeat blood tests, hepatitis tests or ultrasound. Avoid adding supplements marketed for cleansing, and do not stop prescribed treatment without a prescriber's plan.

Arrange urgent assessment for yellow skin or eyes, confusion, severe drowsiness, repeated vomiting, rapidly worsening abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, black stools or inability to keep fluids down. These warning signs matter more than how high a result appears on its own. Without warning symptoms, keep the planned appointment and report any new change promptly.
