What should you know about liver function test high?

Liver blood tests measure several different substances, so an abnormal result does not point to one explanation by itself. ALT and AST can rise when liver cells are irritated; alkaline phosphatase and GGT may change when bile flow is affected. Bilirubin can rise when the body is not processing or clearing bile normally, while albumin and clotting tests give information about liver function over a longer period.

Possible contributors include a recent infection, fatty liver changes, alcohol-related injury, hepatitis, a medicine or supplement, strenuous exercise, or a problem affecting the gallbladder or bile ducts. A mild, isolated change may be monitored, but the pattern across the panel matters more than one value. Your clinician may compare the result with earlier tests and arrange repeat blood tests or imaging.

Arrange a review with the clinician who ordered the test, even if you feel well. Take a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements, and mention recent illness, alcohol intake, exercise, travel, and any previous liver condition. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.

The follow-up may include repeating the panel, checking for viral hepatitis, reviewing metabolic health, or arranging an ultrasound. Until you have advice, avoid alcohol and do not start new supplements marketed for cleansing or repairing the liver. Follow the testing instructions you are given, because timing and preparation can affect interpretation.

Seek urgent medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes with worsening illness, severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, fainting, vomiting blood, or black stools. Seek prompt assessment for dark urine with pale stools, marked swelling, fever, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These symptoms need assessment because they can signal a significant liver or bile-flow problem; do not wait for a routine repeat test.

Ask which markers are high, whether the pattern suggests irritation or reduced function, and how the result compares with your earlier tests. You can also ask whether any medicine or supplement should be changed, whether hepatitis testing or an ultrasound is appropriate, and when the blood tests should be repeated.
