What should you know about liver function in pregnancy?

A clinician may order liver tests for itching, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, yellow skin or eyes, high blood pressure, or an unexpected blood-test result. The panel can include liver enzymes, bilirubin, albumin and clotting markers. Pregnancy can affect how some results are interpreted, so the pregnancy stage, blood pressure, urine findings, medicines and symptoms all matter. A result outside the laboratory range does not identify one diagnosis on its own.

Possible explanations include pregnancy-related conditions, viral infection, medication effects, gallbladder or bile-duct problems, and pre-existing illness. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are assessed with specific tests rather than liver enzymes alone.

Contact your maternity team or clinician promptly if new symptoms develop, and provide a full list of medicines, vitamins and supplements. Do not start, stop or change treatment without pregnancy-specific advice. Ask whether you need repeat blood tests, urine checks, blood-pressure monitoring, imaging or specialist review. Follow any fasting instructions for the complete set of tests; preparation is not identical for every Liver Function Test.

Seek urgent maternity or emergency assessment for severe headache or visual changes with high blood pressure, intense or persistent upper abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes, confusion, heavy bleeding, repeated vomiting, or severe itching with a new rash or feeling unwell. Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms are rapidly worsening.
