Liver failure in cancer patients

The liver helps process medicines and nutrients, make proteins that support clotting and fluid balance, handle bile, and remove waste products. Cancer may affect these functions directly, spread to the liver, press on bile drainage, or alter blood flow. Other problems such as infection, dehydration, or a medicine reaction can also worsen liver tests, so clinicians look for the specific cause rather than assuming cancer is responsible.

Signs can include yellow skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal swelling, bruising, poor appetite, nausea, or changes in alertness. Symptoms may develop gradually or change quickly. A person can have abnormal liver tests without liver failure, while serious functional change may require urgent attention.

Keep the oncology and liver teams informed about new symptoms, reduced eating, vomiting, bowel changes, or confusion. Bring every medicine and supplement to appointments, including products bought without a prescription. The team may use blood tests and imaging to assess bile flow, clotting, protein levels, kidney function, and the tumour. Depending on the findings, care may involve liver resection, tumour ablation, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, drainage, medicine changes, or symptom support.

Seek immediate medical care for confusion, marked drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, fever, severe abdominal pain, fainting, rapidly worsening yellowing, or trouble breathing. These symptoms may reflect infection, bleeding, pressure from fluid, or worsening organ function. Call emergency services if the person cannot be woken or is struggling to breathe.

Ask what the tests show about liver function, what reversible causes have been checked, whether current cancer treatment needs adjustment, and who to call outside clinic hours.
