What should you know about liver failure blood tests?

A panel may include enzymes that rise when liver cells are irritated, bilirubin linked with jaundice, albumin made by the liver, and clotting tests that reflect how quickly blood forms a clot. A result outside the laboratory range does not by itself prove liver failure. Some changes reflect infection, medicines, alcohol-related injury, reduced blood flow, or another illness. The pattern, symptoms and change over time matter more than one isolated result.

A clinician may also check a full blood count, kidney markers, glucose and tests for viral hepatitis. Imaging can add information about the liver’s shape, bile ducts and blood flow.

Take the report to the clinician who ordered it and ask which results are abnormal and whether repeat testing is needed. Give a complete list of prescribed medicines, supplements, and non-prescription products. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, and avoid alcohol until the results have been explained. Conditions such as Anaemia and Chronic Kidney Disease can affect tiredness or related results, so the wider assessment matters.

Seek urgent medical help for new confusion, extreme sleepiness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or yellowing with marked deterioration. Also seek prompt care for easy bleeding, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether a previous blood test looked reassuring.

Which part of the panel is abnormal? Does the pattern suggest injury, impaired bile flow, or reduced liver function? Could a medicine, supplement, infection, or another condition explain it? Do I need repeat blood tests, imaging, or specialist review?
