What should you know about liver blood test fasting?

A liver panel is often ordered with other blood tests, some of which can be affected by recent food or drinks. The request may therefore reflect the complete set of tests rather than the liver markers alone. Fasting instructions differ between services. Water is commonly allowed, but do not assume that coffee, juice, chewing gum or supplements are permitted when fasting has been requested.

Confirm the start time for fasting and what you may drink. Take regular medicines only as instructed; some must be taken with food, so ask before changing them. Tell the service if you have diabetes, feel unwell when fasting, are pregnant or have previously fainted during blood collection. Bring the requested paperwork, drink water if allowed and eat soon after the sample when advised.

Fasting is preparation, not a treatment for liver disease. Seek prompt advice for yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, persistent vomiting or worsening abdominal pain. Get emergency help for vomiting blood, black stools, fainting or sudden confusion, whether or not you have completed the test.

Ask whether fasting is required for every test on the request, whether plain water is allowed, and how to manage each medicine. If you accidentally eat, ask whether to attend or reschedule rather than guessing.
