What should you know about liver and lung mets?

Metastases are areas of the same cancer in a different organ, rather than a new liver or lung cancer. Scans may show one area or several, and a team may review earlier pathology, imaging, and blood tests to clarify the pattern. Bowel Cancer and Pancreatic Cancer are examples of cancers that can spread to the liver. Symptoms vary: some people have breathlessness, cough, abdominal discomfort, reduced appetite, or tiredness, while others notice no new symptom.

Ask for a coordinated review with medical oncology, radiology, and, when relevant, surgery or interventional specialists. Treatment may use whole-body medicines such as Chemotherapy, or local approaches such as Liver Resection or Tumour Ablation when the number, size, and position of deposits make them suitable. The original cancer, liver function, breathing, previous treatment, and personal goals all shape the plan. Keep a current list of medicines and report new symptoms before appointments.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, fainting, heavy bleeding, or vomiting blood. Contact the oncology team promptly for new jaundice, a swollen abdomen, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, fever, or rapidly increasing pain. These symptoms need assessment because they can reflect complications, treatment effects, or another illness.

Which cancer started the metastases, and has the diagnosis been confirmed from imaging or a biopsy? How many liver and lung areas are present, and where are they located? What is the aim of treatment in my situation? Could surgery, ablation, or systemic treatment be appropriate? Which symptoms should lead me to call the team immediately?
