Live natural birth: what to know

Labour may begin with contractions, waters breaking, or a change in the cervix. During active labour, contractions help the cervix open; pushing then helps the baby pass through the birth canal. Pain-relief choices can include breathing techniques, movement, water, medicines, or an epidural. A vaginal birth can be supported by a midwife, obstetrician, or birth partner.

A planned vaginal birth can change if labour slows, the baby shows signs of distress, or the birthing parent becomes unwell. A Caesarean Section may then be recommended.

Discuss your birth preferences, pain relief, monitoring, and transport plan with your maternity team. Pack practical items, learn when to call, and consider who will support you.
