What the procedure involves
A clinician cleans the genital area and applies local anaesthetic gel or uses another anaesthetic plan. A flexible or rigid cystoscope passes through the urethra into the bladder. The camera allows inspection of the lining, and a small sample or treatment may sometimes be discussed if an abnormal area is seen.
Cystoscopy can help investigate blood in urine, repeated urinary symptoms, blockage, or a suspected bladder tumour. It does not by itself provide every answer; urine tests, imaging, or tissue analysis may also be needed. Cystoscopy is used in the assessment and care of bladder cancer.
Preparing and recovering
Follow the clinic's instructions about medicines, allergies, food, drink, and arranging transport if sedation is planned. Afterward, mild burning when passing urine or a small amount of blood can occur briefly. Drink fluids if your clinician says this is suitable, and follow the discharge instructions about activity and medicines.

Contact the care team promptly for fever, chills, worsening pain, heavy or persistent bleeding, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help if you cannot urinate or feel severely unwell. Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines and urinary infections before the procedure.
