What should you know about little red marks on arms?

Flat marks after sun exposure may accompany sunburn, while itchy areas after a new soap, plant, or fabric can fit contact dermatitis. Heat rash tends to appear where sweat is trapped. Psoriasis can create persistent, scaly plaques. Redness that is warm, painful, swollen, and expanding can be a presentation of cellulitis and needs medical attention. Rosacea usually affects the central face rather than the arms, so an arm rash deserves a separate assessment rather than an assumption that it is rosacea.

Check whether the marks blanch when gently pressed, feel raised or scaly, and follow a sleeve edge, product exposure, or sun exposure. Note pain, itch, fever, and how quickly the area changes.

Rinse away possible irritants, use a bland moisturiser, and protect exposed arms from further sun. Keep the skin cool, avoid hot showers and vigorous scrubbing, and do not pick at crusts or blisters. Wear soft, loose sleeves while the skin is sensitive. If marks continue, recur, or leave lasting colour change, a clinician can assess whether treatment for inflammation or another cause is appropriate. Seek prompt care for redness that is hot, painful, swollen, rapidly spreading, or accompanied by fever or pus.
