Little Lump on Neck Under the Skin

The location beneath the skin, mobility, texture, tenderness, and the skin's appearance help guide assessment. Lymph nodes can enlarge during infections affecting the throat, teeth, ears, scalp, or nearby skin. A cyst may feel smooth and sit close to the skin surface.

A neck lump is not automatically cancer. If it stays present, enlarges, or has concerning features, clinicians may consider conditions such as lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or head and neck cancer. Sometimes testing is needed before the source of an abnormal tissue finding is known.

Check the area gently rather than repeatedly prodding it. Write down its approximate position, when it appeared, and any recent infection, dental problem, skin break, or vaccination. Book an appointment if it persists, becomes firmer, seems attached, or changes. A clinician may examine the neck and recommend ultrasound or another test based on the findings.

Get urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, spreads quickly, or comes with severe redness, pain, or marked illness. Seek prompt medical review for unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, drenching night sweats, voice change, or a lump that continues to enlarge.
