What should you know about little blisters on skin?

Contact Dermatitis commonly presents with itchy blisters where a product, plant, metal, or chemical touched the skin. Sunburn can cause tenderness, warmth, redness, and later fluid-filled areas. Dyshidrotic Eczema commonly presents with small itchy blisters on the hands or feet. Chickenpox usually causes an itchy, widespread eruption in different stages, while Shingles commonly causes painful blisters in a band on one side.

Clear fluid, a limited area, and mild itch may fit irritation, but appearance is not enough for a diagnosis. Record when the blisters began, what touched the skin, whether pain or fever is present, and whether new areas are appearing.

Leave blisters intact, wash gently, pat dry, and cover rubbing areas with a clean non-stick dressing. Pause suspected new products and avoid heat, scratching, and direct sun. Do not use leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without advice, particularly on the face or broken skin. If a viral cause is suspected, a clinician may consider Antiviral Treatment promptly.

Get medical advice if blisters are widespread, rapidly increasing, very painful, infected-looking, or associated with fever. Urgent assessment is needed for blisters near the eyes, extensive peeling, breathing difficulty, confusion, or sores in the mouth or genitals.
