What should you know about little black spots on face?

Acne commonly presents with blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples when oil and shed skin cells block a follicle. Folliculitis commonly presents with small bumps around hairs and may sting or itch. Razor bumps can follow shaving, especially where hairs curve back into the skin. Rosacea commonly presents with facial redness and bumps rather than true blackheads, while perioral dermatitis tends to cluster around the mouth.

The colour alone cannot identify the cause. Notice whether the marks are flat or raised, smooth or rough, tender or itchy, and whether they appeared after shaving, a breakout, or a new product.

Cleanse gently, avoid scrubbing or squeezing, and choose non-comedogenic skin products. If shaving seems related, use a clean sharp razor, shave in the direction of growth, and avoid repeatedly passing over the same area. Do not apply strong acids or bleaching products to irritated skin. A clinician can distinguish clogged pores from follicle inflammation and discuss options such as topical treatment or LED Light Therapy where appropriate.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if spots are painful, rapidly multiplying, repeatedly inflamed, leaving scars, or not settling with gentle care. Seek prompt medical attention for facial swelling, spreading warmth, pus with worsening pain, or fever. A spot that changes in shape or colour, bleeds without being picked, or does not heal should also be examined.

Ask whether each mark is a comedone, follicle problem, or post-inflammatory pigment; which ingredients fit your skin; whether shaving or products are contributing; and how long to try a plan before reviewing it.
