Antibiotics for a cough with phlegm

Mucus may appear during a viral cold or acute bronchitis as the airways clear irritation. Colour or thickness does not reliably show that bacteria are present. A cough can also be linked with asthma, reflux, allergies, or a longer-term airway condition such as bronchiectasis. Acute bronchitis commonly causes a cough that may bring up mucus, but antibiotics often do not address its underlying viral trigger.

A clinician may ask when the cough began, listen to your chest, check breathing, and consider your medical history. Treatment depends on that assessment rather than a general list of medicines.

Drink fluids if you can, rest, avoid smoke, and follow label directions for any suitable symptom medicine. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription. If an antibiotic is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and report troublesome reactions.
