What should you know about liquid oral rehydration salts?

Short answer

Liquid oral rehydration salts replace water and electrolytes through the gut when prepared and taken exactly as directed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Mix with
The exact water volume on the packet
Take
Frequent small sips
Avoid
Extra sugar, salt or dilution

Why the mixture helps

The solution contains a carefully balanced combination of salts and glucose that helps the intestine absorb water. It is designed for fluid loss from conditions such as vomiting or diarrhoea, rather than as a general energy drink. It does not remove the infection or other cause of the loss. The prepared liquid may taste salty, and small sips are often easier to keep down than a large drink.

Preparing and taking it

Dissolve the sachet in exactly the volume of safe water stated on the packet. Do not make it stronger, dilute it further or add extra sugar or salt, because the balance affects absorption. Stir until fully mixed and take frequent small sips. Prepare fresh solution as directed, keep it covered and discard it within the product’s stated time. Continue feeding or breastfeeding where appropriate, and ask a pharmacist about use for an infant or someone with kidney disease.

When to get medical help

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, inability to drink, blood in vomit or stool, or very little urine. Arrange prompt advice if vomiting prevents rehydration, diarrhoea continues, fever is concerning or the person is very young, older or medically vulnerable. Oral rehydration therapy cannot replace assessment when the illness is severe.

Useful questions

Ask how much solution to offer, how often to give sips, when normal drinks and food can resume, and which symptoms mean the plan is failing. Check whether an existing condition changes the recommended product.
