What should you know about lipoelastic arm compression?

Compression is usually firmer at the hand or wrist and gradually lighter higher up the arm. This pressure can support movement of lymph fluid through remaining drainage pathways. A sleeve may be recommended after breast or lymph-node treatment, but swelling can have several causes and the garment should be selected by a trained clinician.

Lipoelastic is a garment range rather than a single design. Options differ in fabric, length, seam placement and whether the hand is included. A correct fit matters: folds, rolling edges or excessive tightness can irritate skin and restrict circulation.

Have your arm measured when swelling is stable enough for fitting, and check that the garment sits smoothly from wrist to upper arm. Put it on with clean, dry skin; gloves can reduce pulling and protect the fabric. Follow the wear schedule given by your lymphoedema therapist, remove it for washing as instructed, and inspect your skin each time.

Wash and dry the garment according to its care instructions so its elasticity is preserved. Replace it when it becomes loose, damaged or uncomfortable. Gentle movement, skin care and the exercises recommended by your therapist can complement compression.

Remove the garment and contact your clinician if fingers become numb, blue, unusually cold or increasingly swollen, or if you develop pain, marked pressure, new skin damage or a deep indentation. Seek urgent assessment for sudden one-sided swelling with chest pain or breathlessness, or for a hot, red, rapidly worsening arm with fever. Do not force a garment onto an arm with an unexplained acute change.
