Lipid panel blood test explained

The panel commonly reports total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. LDL can contribute to fatty build-up in artery walls, while HDL is one part of the broader pattern clinicians consider. Triglycerides are another blood fat affected by meals, alcohol, medicines and some health conditions. One result is not a diagnosis of heart disease and should be considered with blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family history and previous cardiovascular problems.

Check whether fasting is needed for your particular panel; many people can follow their usual routine, but the requesting clinician decides. Take medicines as directed unless told otherwise and report supplements or recent illness. Your clinician may suggest food changes, activity, weight management, treatment of another condition or medicine, depending on your overall risk rather than one isolated value. Keep the report and ask when it should be reviewed.

A lipid panel itself does not usually cause symptoms. Seek emergency help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness on one side, trouble speaking or sudden collapse. These warning signs need urgent assessment and should not wait for a cholesterol appointment. Arrange routine follow-up for an unexpected result, especially if you have diabetes, kidney disease or a strong family history of early heart problems.
