Lipase blood test: what your result means

Lipase helps break down fats during digestion. A raised result can occur when pancreatic cells are irritated, including with pancreatitis, but the number must be read alongside your symptoms, examination and other tests. Kidney problems, some medicines and conditions affecting the digestive tract can also influence the result. A result within the laboratory range does not explain every cause of abdominal pain.

The test is usually requested when there is upper-abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, especially when pain reaches the back. The laboratory report's reference range matters because methods vary.

Ask the clinician or laboratory whether you need to avoid food beforehand; preparation depends on the other blood tests ordered. Tell them about medicines, supplements, alcohol use and any kidney or digestive condition. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Discuss the result with the clinician who requested it, who may arrange repeat blood work or imaging when the symptoms and examination suggest a pancreatic problem.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening upper-abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, a swollen abdomen, fever with marked illness, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. These symptoms can signal a problem needing prompt assessment, regardless of whether a lipase result is high or normal. For persistent milder pain, arrange a clinical review rather than interpreting the blood result alone.

Ask what your lipase value means in your laboratory's range, whether your symptoms fit pancreatic inflammation, whether any medicine could affect it, and whether another test or follow-up appointment is needed.
