What should you know about lip wrinkles?

Some lines appear mainly when the lips move, while others remain visible at rest. Repeated pursing, gradual changes in collagen and elastin, dry skin, smoking, and ultraviolet exposure can all contribute. The pattern may include fine vertical lines above the upper lip, creases at the corners, or lines crossing the lip surface.

A clinician can distinguish ordinary lines from an inflamed rash, a sore, or another skin change by examining texture, colour, symmetry, and symptoms. Lip wrinkles are not the same as crow's feet, although facial movement and sun exposure can affect several areas at once.

Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sun protection on surrounding skin. Avoid licking, scrubbing, or repeatedly irritating the lips, and consider stopping smoking if relevant. If lines remain bothersome, a clinician may discuss topical care, resurfacing, botulinum toxin injection, or dermal filler depending on whether movement, texture, or lost support is the main contributor.

Begin with one clearly defined goal. Treatment around the mouth can affect expression, lip movement, sensation, and fullness, so the plan should account for speech, eating, and facial balance.

Arrange a medical review if a line becomes a persistent sore, crust, bleeding spot, changing pigmented area, or painful swelling. Seek prompt help for sudden lip swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty, or for spreading redness, pus, or fever.

Ask whether the lines are mainly caused by movement, dryness, sun damage, or volume change; which option targets that cause; how expression and lip function may change; and what aftercare is needed.
