What should you know about lip microneedling?

A trained practitioner moves a sterile microneedling device over selected skin, creating fine channels that trigger a healing response. The goal may be to improve texture, soften the look of fine lines, or support more even-looking skin around the mouth. It is different from injecting filler into the lips and does not add volume.

The area may feel warm, prickly, or tender during and after treatment. Temporary redness, mild swelling, dryness, and sensitivity can occur. Active cold sores, open skin, infection, or an unexplained rash should be assessed before treatment. A microneedling pen is one device used for this procedure.

Before treatment, tell the clinician about cold sores, allergies, medicines, recent sun exposure, and products that irritate your skin. Arrive with clean skin and avoid applying makeup over the treatment area. Afterward, follow the clinic's cleansing and moisturising instructions, avoid picking or scrubbing, and protect the area from sun while it settles.

Recovery depends on needle depth, the condition being addressed, and your skin's response. Do not use strong exfoliants or active products until the clinician says they are suitable. If your main concern is sun-related change, ask whether options such as fractional laser treatment or RF microneedling are more appropriate.

Contact the treating clinic if swelling, pain, heat, or redness is increasing rather than settling, or if blisters, pus, spreading rash, or fever develops. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, throat tightness, faintness, or rapidly expanding facial swelling, because these can signal a serious allergic reaction.
