What should you know about lip cut stitches?

A clinician examines the cut’s depth, length, position, contamination, and effect on the edge where the lip meets the skin. A wound that passes through the lip, exposes deeper tissue, or leaves the border uneven may need careful alignment. Some small cuts can heal without sutures. The clinician cleans the area and may use lidocaine local anaesthetic before repairing it with surgical sutures or another closure method. Bites, dirty wounds, and injuries involving teeth may need additional assessment.

Follow the wound-care instructions and keep the area clean. Use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods to reduce swelling, without pressing directly on the stitches. Choose soft foods, chew carefully, and avoid pulling the lip while opening your mouth. Do not pick at crusts or apply unapproved products. Take prescribed medicines as directed and attend the planned review for removal or a healing check; some stitches dissolve and others need removal.

Get urgent help if bleeding does not stop with firm, continuous pressure, the wound is widely open, breathing or swallowing is difficult, or a tooth or jaw injury is suspected. Contact the treating service for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, worsening pain, wound separation, or numbness. Ask about tetanus vaccination when the cut was dirty, caused by an object, or your vaccination history is uncertain. Do not delay assessment for a wound that may need alignment.
