Lines on the forehead that are not wrinkles: what to know

A typical wrinkle is a crease that often becomes more visible with expression or when skin loses elasticity. A line that appeared suddenly, follows a scar, feels rough or firm, changes colour, or remains sharply localised may need a different explanation. Sun-damaged skin can produce uneven texture and pigment, while irritation or inflammation may cause scale, redness or itch.

Use sunscreen, shade and a hat, and avoid picking, scraping or applying strong products to an unexplained mark. Keep the routine simple with gentle cleanser and moisturiser until the skin has been assessed. Note when the line began, whether it changes with expression, and any associated itching, scaling, pain or bleeding.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for a line that is new, persistent, thickened, scaly, bleeding, painful, crusted, ulcerated or repeatedly changing. Seek prompt care for rapid growth, spreading redness or fever. Sudden facial weakness, confusion, speech trouble or severe headache requires urgent medical attention.

Ask what features make the mark different from a wrinkle, whether it needs a skin examination or biopsy, and which products should be paused. Discuss sun protection, warning signs, and whether any cosmetic treatment should wait until the diagnosis is clear.
