What should you know about a linear accelerator radiation machine?

A LINAC uses electrical energy to generate a radiation beam. The beam can be shaped and directed from different angles so the treatment plan focuses on the intended area. You lie on a firm couch while the treatment head moves around you; nothing is inserted into the body.

Your radiation oncologist prescribes the plan, and medical physicists and therapists check the machine settings and your position. Imaging may be used immediately before delivery to compare your position with the planning images. The equipment can make sounds as it operates, but you can communicate with staff throughout the visit.

Planning may involve a scan, skin marks or a positioning aid, followed by a schedule of treatment visits. Bring an updated medicine list and mention previous radiotherapy, implanted electronics, pregnancy possibility, or anxiety about enclosed spaces. Follow the centre's instructions for meals, fluids, and skin care.

Arrive with enough time for changing and positioning. Keep still once the therapist has aligned you, and use the communication system if you need help. External-beam treatment does not make you radioactive. Fatigue or irritation in the treated region may appear during or after a course, depending on the area and dose plan.

Tell the treatment team about symptoms that are new, escalating, or stopping you from drinking, eating, sleeping, or moving normally. Contact them promptly for fever, severe skin breakdown, persistent vomiting, new weakness, or unexpected bleeding. Get emergency help for severe breathing trouble, collapse, confusion, or bleeding that will not stop.

Ask what the beam is intended to treat, how your position is verified, whether a device or prior treatment affects planning, and which symptoms need a same-day call. Confirm the appointment timetable and the contact route for evenings or holidays.
