What should you know about linear accelerator companies?

Short answer

Linear accelerator companies supply complex radiotherapy systems, but patient safety depends on the treatment team, planning, maintenance, and quality checks as well as the manufacturer.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Supplier role
May provide hardware, software, training, and service.
Clinical role
The care team creates and verifies your treatment plan.
Useful focus
Ask about checks, support, imaging, and continuity.

What a supplier provides

A manufacturer may provide the accelerator, software for treatment planning, imaging features, training, servicing, and technical support. Different systems can deliver similar treatment types but vary in beam shaping, imaging, motion management, room design, and how they fit with a clinic’s workflow.

For a patient, the company name is only one part of the picture. Your radiation oncologist chooses the technique and target, medical physicists check the planned dose, therapists position you, and engineers maintain the equipment. A centre’s experience with its system and its ability to provide review and support are directly relevant to your care.

How to assess the service

Ask the clinic which system it uses and which treatment techniques are available there. Find out how your plan is checked before the first session, how the machine is tested between patients, and what happens if equipment needs servicing. Ask whether image guidance is part of your plan and whether another machine or centre would be needed if a technical problem interrupts treatment. These questions help you assess care without trying to choose a manufacturer yourself.

When to contact the clinic

Speak with the treatment unit if a session is delayed, you cannot be positioned comfortably, or you notice a change in the way a treatment appointment is carried out. Report symptoms such as severe pain, new weakness, breathing difficulty, or repeated vomiting without waiting for the next routine review. Get urgent medical help for collapse, sudden confusion, or severe breathing difficulty.

Questions for your doctor

Which system will deliver my treatment? What quality checks are completed before treatment starts? How does the team account for movement or changes in my anatomy? Who explains any delay or equipment change?

Questions people ask

Does a well-known company guarantee a better result?

No. Outcomes depend on the diagnosis, treatment plan, clinical expertise, equipment checks, and many patient-specific factors.

Can the clinic change machines during my course?

Sometimes a centre may use another compatible machine or reschedule a session. Ask how any change would be checked against your plan.
