What should you know about Lil Wayne and epilepsy?

A seizure is a temporary change in the brain's electrical activity. It can cause staring, altered awareness, unusual movements, stiffening, shaking, sensory changes, or loss of consciousness. One seizure does not automatically establish epilepsy; clinicians consider the event, medical history, examination, and sometimes tests. Seizure patterns vary widely, so a person's experience cannot be inferred from a celebrity story or a video.

Keep the person away from traffic, water, stairs, and sharp objects. Cushion their head, loosen tight clothing, and turn them onto their side when possible. Track how long the episode lasts. Do not restrain them, put anything in their mouth, or give food or drink until they are fully alert. Arrange medical assessment after a first suspected seizure or an unexplained episode.

Call emergency services if a seizure continues for several minutes, repeats without recovery, causes serious injury, happens in water, affects breathing, or occurs during pregnancy. Get urgent help for a first seizure, prolonged confusion, or new weakness. Stay with the person and follow the emergency operator's instructions.
