Ligneous conjunctivitis: what should you know?

The conjunctiva is the thin tissue covering the white of the eye and inner eyelids. Ligneous conjunctivitis can cause thick, woody or gelatinous-looking membranes, persistent redness, swelling, irritation, tearing, and discharge. Lesions may return after removal and can affect one or both eyes.

Because the appearance can resemble other forms of Conjunctivitis, a clinician needs to examine the eye rather than relying on a photograph or symptoms alone. Recurrent disease may also involve other mucous membranes, so mention nasal, gum, or genital symptoms if present.

Arrange a GP Consultation or eye specialist assessment for persistent, recurrent, or unusual conjunctival membranes. Do not rub the eye, peel away tissue, share towels, or use leftover drops. Wash hands before touching the face and avoid contact lenses until a clinician confirms they are suitable.

Treatment is individualised and may involve careful removal of lesions, lubricating care, or medicines such as Antibiotic Treatment when infection or a secondary problem is suspected. Follow-up matters because regrowth can occur.

Seek urgent eye care for reduced or blurred vision, significant Light Sensitivity, severe pain, marked swelling, injury, a chemical splash, or rapidly worsening redness. Prompt assessment is also needed for thick Eye Discharge with fever or if the eye cannot open comfortably.

Ask whether the membrane needs sampling or removal, how recurrence will be monitored, which drops are appropriate, and whether symptoms outside the eye need assessment.
