Lightweight cast for a fracture: what to know

A cast holds a broken bone or injured joint in a protected position while the body repairs it. Lightweight options often use fibreglass cast material, while Plaster of Paris may be selected when a mouldable support or swelling accommodation is needed. The outer shell is only one part of treatment: padding, the fit around the limb, and follow-up checks also matter.

Some fractures can be aligned without an operation through Closed Reduction before casting. Others need a different plan, such as Fracture Fixation Surgery, if the bones cannot be held in a suitable position. An Ankle Fracture and a Distal Radius Fracture may each require different cast designs and movement restrictions.

Keep the cast dry unless the treating team has confirmed that its covering can be exposed to water. Do not insert objects inside it, trim its edges, or alter the padding. Elevate the limb when it is swollen, move the uncovered fingers or toes gently, and use crutches or other aids exactly as instructed. Never put weight through a leg cast until you have been told that it is allowed.

Keep follow-up appointments so alignment, skin, swelling, and healing can be checked. Once the cast is removed, Physiotherapy may help restore joint movement, strength, balance, and confidence.

Contact the treating service promptly for increasing tightness, severe or worsening pain, burning, new numbness, pins and needles, or fingers or toes that become pale, blue, cold, or difficult to move. Seek urgent care if the cast cracks, becomes soaked, develops a sharp edge, smells strongly with discharge, or is followed by sudden calf pain or breathlessness.
