Light yellow cloudy urine in females

Urine appearance changes with fluid intake, crystals, mucus, and the way a sample is collected. Vaginal discharge, menstrual blood, or irritation can mix with urine and make it look cloudy without coming from the bladder. Dehydration may make urine darker or stronger-smelling. A urinary tract infection may cause burning, urgency, frequent small amounts, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell.

Kidney infection is more concerning and can present with fever, chills, side or back pain, nausea, or marked illness. Cloudy urine itself cannot distinguish a bladder infection from discharge or another cause. Pregnancy, menopause, diabetes, and recurrent infections are useful context to share with a clinician.

Drink fluids regularly, unless a clinician has advised otherwise, and avoid scented washes or douching around the vagina. If cloudiness continues or urinary symptoms appear, arrange a urine test. A clean-catch sample can reduce contamination: wash your hands, follow the collection instructions, and keep the container from touching skin.

Write down when the change began and whether it follows sex, menstruation, a new product, or a change in medicines. Include discharge colour or smell, itching, pain, fever, and back symptoms. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the correct treatment depends on the cause and test findings.

Arrange prompt care for burning urine, urgency, blood, pelvic pain, worsening smell, or symptoms that do not settle. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or pain in the side or back, which may signal infection affecting the kidneys. If pregnant, contact your maternity team promptly for urinary symptoms.
