Light spotting in the first trimester

The cervix can bleed more easily in early pregnancy, including after sex. Infection and non-cancerous cervical or uterine changes are other possibilities. Spotting can also occur with miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. A symptom cannot distinguish these causes by itself, and an ectopic pregnancy may be an emergency even when bleeding is light. Your clinician may combine symptoms with examination, blood tests, and ultrasound.

Tell your maternity clinician or early-pregnancy service about the spotting. Note its colour, amount, duration, and whether cramps or pain are present. Wear a pad to monitor it and avoid tampons. Ask before taking a new medicine. If your pregnancy has not been confirmed inside the uterus, mention that when you call because it changes how symptoms are assessed.

Seek emergency care for one-sided or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or bleeding that becomes heavy. Worsening cramps also need prompt review. If you feel suddenly unwell, do not drive yourself; ask someone to help or contact emergency services.
