Light spotting at 4 weeks pregnant

Early pregnancy spotting can reflect changes where the pregnancy is developing or irritation of the cervix, which can bleed more easily. It can also occur when a pregnancy is not developing as expected, or with an ectopic pregnancy outside the uterus. Spotting alone cannot distinguish these possibilities. A clinician may use symptom details, pregnancy hormone testing, and ultrasound timing to clarify what is happening. Tell the service how far along you are, whether the pregnancy was confirmed, and whether you have pain.

Contact a maternity, gynaecology, or urgent-care service for advice about any bleeding in early pregnancy, especially if it is new or continuing. Record the colour, amount, clots, pain, and when each symptom occurs. Use a pad rather than a tampon while monitoring. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, and follow the clinician’s instructions about testing or review.

Seek emergency help for severe or one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, heavy bleeding, or a pale and clammy feeling. Fever or feeling acutely unwell also warrants urgent assessment. These warning signs matter even if the spotting later slows.
