Light red bleeding after sex

Friction can cause a small surface tear, especially when there is not enough natural lubrication. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause may make vaginal tissue thinner and more prone to bleeding. Cervical ectropion, polyps, inflammation, or an infection such as Chlamydia can also cause bleeding after contact. A cervical or vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex, although many episodes have a non-cancerous explanation. The bleeding may appear pink, light red, or brown and may occur once or recur.

Note when the bleeding happens, how long it lasts, its colour, and whether pain, unusual discharge, odour, or urinary symptoms occur. Pause sex if it causes pain or bleeding, and avoid inserting products until the cause is clearer. Arrange a gynaecology or primary-care appointment if this is a new symptom, happens again, or follows menopause. Assessment may include an examination, infection testing, cervical screening review, and pregnancy testing when relevant. Treatment depends on the finding; a cone biopsy is used only when a clinician needs to remove and examine abnormal cervical tissue.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy or persistent, or if it occurs with severe pelvic pain, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or possible pregnancy. Do not wait for a routine appointment when you feel acutely unwell. Bleeding after sex with a new partner plus pelvic pain or discharge needs prompt infection assessment.
