Light headedness and shortness of breath: what to know

Short answer
Light headedness with shortness of breath can signal a breathing, circulation, blood, or allergic problem and needs attention if sudden or severe.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Seek emergency help
- Severe breathlessness, fainting, chest pressure, blue lips, or throat swelling
- Until assessed
- Rest upright, avoid driving, and record triggers and associated symptoms
What these symptoms can mean
Light headedness may feel like faintness, unsteadiness, or a floating sensation. Breathlessness can happen during activity, at rest, or with chest tightness. Asthma, acute bronchitis, COPD, bronchiectasis, and anaemia can each present with shortness of breath, but the combination does not identify one cause.
Atrial fibrillation or angina can affect how efficiently blood moves or how the heart receives oxygen. Anaphylaxis can cause breathing difficulty together with swelling, wheezing, or a sudden feeling of collapse. The timing, triggers, heart symptoms, cough, fever, and medical history help a clinician separate these possibilities.
What to do now
Stop exertion and sit upright somewhere cool and safe. Loosen restrictive clothing and take slow, comfortable breaths. Do not drive while light headed. If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler, use it according to your personal action plan; do not use someone else’s medicine.
Arrange a medical assessment if the symptoms recur, appear with ordinary activity, or have no clear explanation. Note when they started, what you were doing, any palpitations or chest discomfort, and whether there was wheezing, cough, bleeding, or a recent illness.
When to seek urgent care
Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, fainting, blue or grey lips, new confusion, severe chest pressure, coughing blood, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat. Treat sudden breathing difficulty after a possible allergen as an emergency, especially when a rash or wheeze is present.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what examinations or tests could clarify whether the symptoms relate to the lungs, heart, blood count, or an allergic reaction. Ask which warning signs should prompt emergency care and whether you need a written plan for future episodes.

Questions people ask
Can anxiety cause both symptoms?
Stress can change breathing and make light headedness more noticeable, but new, severe, or recurring symptoms still need medical assessment.
Should I exercise through these symptoms?
No. Stop and rest; seek advice before resuming exercise if breathlessness or light headedness returns.
