What should you know about light green eye discharge?

Sticky or coloured discharge can accompany conjunctivitis, which may be infectious or related to irritation. Allergic conjunctivitis more often causes itching, watering and redness in both eyes, while thick discharge and eyelids sticking together can point toward infection. A blocked tear duct, contact-lens irritation or a foreign body can also cause discharge. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, and discharge from one eye can spread to the other through touch.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Gently clean discharge with clean water and a fresh cloth for each eye; do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics or eye drops. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup until the eye is comfortable and discharge has stopped, and replace contaminated lens products as advised. Do not use leftover antibiotic drops because the wrong treatment may irritate the eye or delay care. Arrange an examination if discharge persists or worsens.

Seek same-day medical care for eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, marked swelling, injury, or a sensation that something is stuck. Contact-lens wearers with redness or discharge need prompt assessment because corneal infections can progress quickly. Urgent care is also appropriate if the eye is difficult to open or symptoms are severe.
