What should you know about light colored melanoma?

Melanoma is a skin cancer arising from pigment-producing cells, but a lesion may contain little visible brown or black pigment. A pale pink, red, tan, or flesh-coloured spot can still be suspicious when it changes in size, shape, surface, sensation, or colour, or when it stands out from your other marks.

A photograph or mirror check cannot diagnose melanoma. A clinician may examine the lesion with magnification and decide whether a biopsy is needed. If melanoma is confirmed, the report and examination guide staging and treatment choices.

Arrange a prompt dermatology appointment for a new or changing light lesion, especially one that bleeds, crusts, repeatedly scabs, itches, or does not heal. Do not remove it at home or apply a cosmetic lightening product. Note when you first noticed it and bring photographs that show its change over time.

Depending on the findings, care may include surgical excision, wider skin cancer surgery, or a sentinel lymph node biopsy for selected melanomas. More advanced disease may involve immunotherapy. The treatment plan depends on pathology and staging, not colour alone.

Seek prompt medical review for rapid change, spontaneous bleeding, ulceration, persistent crusting, or a lesion with an irregular border. Seek urgent care if a wound becomes very painful, hot, swollen, or produces pus. New neurological symptoms in someone with known melanoma require urgent assessment.

Ask whether the lesion needs a biopsy, what the pathology shows, whether margins or lymph nodes need assessment, and which follow-up schedule fits your result. If melanoma is diagnosed, ask how staging affects treatment and what skin changes should trigger an earlier visit.
