What should you know about light but cloudy urine?

Cloudiness can come from harmless changes in concentration, crystals, mucus, semen or vaginal discharge. It can also accompany a urinary tract infection, particularly when there is burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort or a strong smell. Dehydration more often makes urine darker, but concentrated urine can look less clear.

Fever, pain in the side or back, nausea and feeling unwell raise concern for infection involving the kidneys. A urine sample helps distinguish infection from other causes and can guide treatment.

Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether the appearance clears. Do not use leftover antibiotics. Arrange a medical review if cloudiness persists, returns often, or occurs with pain, burning, urgency, blood or an unusual discharge. A clean urine sample may be requested.

Seek urgent medical care for fever with side or back pain, vomiting, shaking chills, confusion, faintness or rapidly worsening illness. Pregnancy, a weakened immune system, a urinary catheter or known kidney problems lowers the threshold for prompt assessment. Emergency symptoms can indicate a kidney infection or a more serious infection.

Ask whether you need a urine dipstick, culture or other tests, what may be causing the cloudiness, and which symptoms suggest the infection has reached the kidneys. Discuss hydration if you have heart or kidney disease.
