Light bleeding after sex during pregnancy: what to know

Bleeding after sex can happen from friction or a sensitive cervix and does not confirm pregnancy. Early pregnancy can sometimes involve light spotting, but bleeding immediately after sex is not a reliable way to tell whether conception occurred. Chlamydia can present with bleeding after sex, sometimes with discharge, pelvic discomfort or pain when urinating. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can also present with bleeding after sex; this symptom needs assessment rather than a conclusion about its cause.

Record when the bleeding happened, its colour and amount, whether it followed penetration or another trigger, and whether it stopped. Note pain, discharge, fever, urinary symptoms and your period dates. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. Arrange a routine appointment if bleeding recurs, continues, happens after sex, or is new after menopause. A clinician may ask about contraception, medicines and sexual health and may examine the vagina and cervix. If cervical changes need further evaluation, a cone biopsy is one procedure that may be discussed.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Seek prompt assessment for recurring bleeding, bleeding after menopause, or bleeding with foul-smelling discharge or significant pain. Do not wait for a routine visit if you feel weak or unwell.
