Light bleeding after your period: what to know

A small amount of pink, red or brown discharge may appear as a period is ending. Bleeding between periods can also follow a change in contraception, stress, or a cycle that has shifted. Dryness or irritation around the vagina or cervix may cause spotting. Chlamydia can present with bleeding between periods, sometimes with unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort or pain when urinating. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause can make vaginal tissues thinner and easier to irritate. Bleeding after a period does not by itself identify a serious condition. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can present with bleeding between periods or after sex, while vaginal cancer can also cause unusual bleeding. These conditions require clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Record when the bleeding happened, its colour and amount, whether it followed penetration or another trigger, and whether it stopped. Note pain, discharge, fever, urinary symptoms and your period dates. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. Arrange a routine appointment if bleeding recurs, continues, happens after sex, or is new after menopause. A clinician may ask about contraception, medicines and sexual health and may examine the vagina and cervix. If cervical changes need further evaluation, a cone biopsy is one procedure that may be discussed.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Seek prompt assessment for recurring bleeding, bleeding after menopause, or bleeding with foul-smelling discharge or significant pain. Do not wait for a routine visit if you feel weak or unwell.
