What it may mean

Arousal increases blood flow to genital tissue, and friction or small surface breaks can leave pink or red spotting. Dryness, inflammation, a vaginal infection, or a sensitive area on the cervix can also contribute. Sexually transmitted infections such as [Chlamydia](/conditions/chlamydia/) may cause bleeding with contact, sometimes with few other symptoms. Cervical cell changes, including [Cervical Dysplasia](/conditions/cervical-dysplasia/), are less common but need appropriate follow-up. Bleeding does not by itself identify the cause or mean cancer.

What to do next

Note when the spotting happened, whether penetration occurred, its colour and amount, and whether you also noticed pain, discharge, odour, itching, or urinary discomfort. Pause penetrative activity until irritation settles, and avoid inserting products if tissue feels sore. Arrange a gynaecology or sexual health assessment if it happens again, follows a new partner, or has no obvious explanation. The clinician may examine the vagina and cervix and offer infection testing or cervical screening follow-up. A cone biopsy is one procedure used for selected cervical cell changes; it is not a treatment to choose without an assessment.

Seek urgent care for bleeding that becomes heavy, severe pelvic pain, dizziness, fainting, fever, or possible pregnancy with pain. Arrange prompt review for repeated contact bleeding, bleeding after menopause, or bleeding with a visible sore or unusual discharge.
