Life Expectancy With Liver Metastasis

Liver metastasis means cancer cells have travelled to the liver from another starting point. The liver may contain one or several areas, and cancer may also be present in other organs. The original cancer type matters because its biology guides treatment and expected behaviour.

Clinicians assess scans, blood tests, liver function, symptoms, the amount and position of disease, previous treatment, and physical wellbeing. Reduced appetite, weight change, abdominal discomfort, nausea, itching, or yellowing of the skin can occur, but symptoms vary and may have other causes.

Ask whether tissue testing or genomic tumour profiling could identify a treatment suited to the cancer’s biology. Depending on the primary cancer and distribution, options may include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, or another systemic treatment. A liver-focused procedure is considered only when its likely benefit fits the overall disease pattern and health.

Palliative care can be introduced at any stage to help with pain, nausea, fatigue, appetite, sleep, mood, and family support while cancer treatment continues or when priorities change. Keep a record of symptoms and medicines, and tell the team about reduced eating, confusion, swelling, or increasing abdominal size.

Contact your care team promptly for new yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, unusual sleepiness, confusion, fever, or bleeding. Sudden severe pain, fainting, or difficulty breathing needs urgent assessment.
