What should you know about lichen planus can be cured?

Some episodes settle with time, while others need treatment to reduce itching, swelling and new bumps. The skin may look calmer before its colour returns to its usual tone. Dark or pale marks can remain after active inflammation has stopped. Symptoms can also recur, especially at a different site, so a previous quiet period does not prove that every new rash is lichen planus. A clinician may distinguish active disease from residual colour change by checking texture, scale and symptoms rather than colour alone.

Follow the prescribed plan for as long as directed, even when itching eases, and report side effects instead of stopping or changing treatment independently. Topical corticosteroids may be used on selected areas; oral corticosteroid treatment can be considered for more widespread or difficult disease. Moisturiser, gentle washing and reduced scratching support the skin barrier. Keep a simple record of new sites, mouth symptoms, nail changes and medicines taken, because this helps guide follow-up and identify patterns.

Arrange an appointment if treatment is not easing the itch, new bumps continue to appear, or the rash is affecting sleep or daily activity. Seek prompt care for painful mouth or genital sores, trouble swallowing, eye symptoms, rapidly worsening skin, or signs of infection such as pus and fever.
