What should you know about lichen planus and pregnancy?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin condition that may cause itchy, raised or purple-looking bumps. It can affect the skin, mouth, nails or genital area. Pregnancy can change how symptoms feel and can make medication decisions more complex, but a rash is not automatically a sign of a pregnancy problem. A clinician can distinguish lichen planus from other pregnancy-related rashes by examining its pattern and, when needed, testing a small skin sample.

Tell every clinician about the pregnancy, current medicines, supplements and the areas affected. Do not stop a prescribed medicine suddenly or start an over-the-counter cream without checking first. A clinician may suggest a carefully chosen topical corticosteroid for limited areas; more extensive disease may need a different plan. Arrange prompt assessment for rapidly spreading inflammation, extensive blistering, severe pain, fever, difficulty eating or drinking, eye symptoms, or sores in the genital area. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a severe reaction after a medicine. New mouth or skin sores that do not settle also deserve examination rather than self-treatment.
