LFT blood work: what to know

LFTs may include alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, albumin, and related measurements. Together, they can point toward liver-cell irritation, changes in bile flow, or altered protein production. They do not measure every aspect of liver health and cannot, alone, name the cause. Recent illness, alcohol, medicines, supplements, exercise, and hydration may affect a result.

Check whether fasting is needed because preparation depends on the wider blood panel. List all medicines and supplements, and mention recent illness or changes in alcohol intake. Read the report with the clinician who ordered it; the direction and combination of results often matter more than one flagged value. Follow-up may include a repeat sample, imaging, or additional tests.

Arrange review for persistent nausea, unexplained itching, pale stools, dark urine, yellowing of the eyes, or ongoing discomfort under the ribs. Seek urgent help for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, collapse, or rapidly worsening jaundice. Use the result as a reason for appropriate review, not as a self-diagnosis.
