LFT blood test in pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy can change how some blood results are interpreted. LFTs may be requested when there is itching, nausea, abdominal discomfort, yellowing of the skin, raised blood pressure, or another concern. The panel can include liver enzymes, bilirubin, proteins, and markers related to bile flow. One result rarely provides the whole answer; clinicians look for a pattern and may compare it with earlier results.

Follow the maternity team’s instructions about food, drink, and medicines. Tell them about supplements, prescribed treatment, itching, pain, vomiting, and any change in fetal movement. Keep the result with your pregnancy records and ask when it will be reviewed. Further checks may include repeat blood work, urine testing, blood-pressure monitoring, or an ultrasound, depending on the findings.

Contact your maternity team promptly for intense or widespread itching, especially on the palms or soles, yellow skin or eyes, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or pain beneath the ribs. Seek urgent maternity care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, or reduced fetal movement. Do not wait for routine results if warning symptoms are present.
